Worship Response Stations: God's Family Tree

God's Family Tree.

We are adopted, grafted, into the family
of the King of kings.

We are children of God.

This station is a place kids come to
reflect over who they are in Christ.

The world may label you many things.
But who does GOD say you are?

The instructions are to simply take
a label and ask God which words of identity
He is speaking over them.

Write them on the label and hang it on
God's Family Tree.

Remember who you are!
Remember WHOSE you are!

And now for those of you who are interested in how
this station was put together...

The tree is actually from a manzanita branch that
a friend picked up from her family's home
in the mountains not too far away.
You can buy them here however.

We simply "planted" it in a painted terra cotta pot.

... With rocks in the bottom for weight and to steady the branch....

My 10 year old son helped with this.

Then we sprayed that foaming gap filler stuff
from the hardware store into the pot.
Be sure to purchase the Big Gap Filler (1" +).
It's great stuff.  It sprays right in and dries firm.

We let it dry (and expand) over night.

Then cut out and shaped it.

And then using a glue gun and Dollar Store fake moss,
covered the top with green and brown moss.

For the labels, we purchased some here.
But once they got here I realized I could make
them for much cheaper.  So I just drew the outline
of a gift tag onto brown card stock and found
I can get 10 per page.  So, with a little time and effort,
you can make each label for less than 3 cents!

Punch a hole at the top,
and string a piece of thread for hanging.

Worship Response Stations: The Great (Com)Mission Station

This is such a special station.
The Great (Com)Mission Station is all about
stirring up a desire in the hearts of the next generation
to make Jesus known all over the world.

There are two giving buckets for the kids
to collect offerings for children in need.

These were simply recycled coffee cans
covered with brown packing paper
and finished with a homemade "label".

One can is for kids to give to World Vision:
to purchase farm animals for children
in third-world countries.
The other can is for Foursquare Gospel Boxes:
A box filled with Sunday School supplies for
missionaries to share the story of Jesus with
children all over the world.

I printed the instructions for using this station
on plain printer paper and displayed
it in a cheap dollar store black frame.

The instructions simply say to take
a green dot sticker and find a place
on the map they would like to pray for.

As they touch that place,
placing their sticker there,
they cover that ground in prayer.

May God touch this place.
May Jesus be known there.

We love this station!

Our Children's Ministry Mission Statement is:
"To cultivate a harvest of world-changers,
growing up in the presence of God."

We are asking God to give these kids
a heart for changing the world.

And for those who are interested in the details
of how this station was put together...

The map is from a local school supply shop (for $5!)
that we just stapled up with a staple gun.
The stickers are small transparent dot stickers
just like these.  It is very simple to do!

Worship Response Stations: Wall of Belief

We used our new "Wall of Belief" for the first time on Sunday.

This Worship Response Station is simply a half-wall that surrounds our sound booth, covered with Chalkboard paint.  But you could use any chalkboard to do this, or paint chalkboard paint on any semi-smooth surface.  It took three coats to get it ready.  We stuck black Command Hooks onto each side of the wall to hold two tin pails of white chalk.  The words "I Believe..." are stenciled at the top.

After Worship, we played one more song, and the kids spent a few minutes worshipping quietly, thinking about what they believe about God.  Then, they each took a turn to write what they believe on the wall.

Our Lesson Title on Sunday was "God Saves" so there were a lot of kids who wrote some version of that.  We will erase it every few weeks and let the kids fill it up again!

Declaring what you believe has the power to deepen and solidify your faith.
Don't you think?

And here's a quick sneak peak at one of the Worship Stations we are working on today:

Hard At Work...

We have been hard at work over the last 2 weeks,
getting everything ready for the new Worship Response Stations.

Here's a little sneak peak of what we've been working on...

New speakers, sound board and projector went in this week.  Yay!

Our new Worship Response Tables arrived in boxes and some lovely volunteers put them together.  Here is a sample of a couple of the tables and lamps. Both the tables and lamps came from Target (on clearance!!) for 50-70% off!  Maybe that goes to show that with God's timing, even the little details can fall into place better than expected.

On the right of the above picture you can see the Sound Booth which we have made-over into the first of our new Worship Response Stations.

Here is what it looked like before:

We painted it with chalkboard paint (3 coats), stenciled the words
"I Believe" with white paint and painted the trim red.

Tonight I bought black command hooks to hang white tin pails filled with white chalk on the wall.  The kids will then get to graffiti on the wall the things that they believe.  Statements of Faith.  Declarations.

On Sunday the kids will begin filling it up.

And there are many more little projects in the works.
We are getting everything ready so that when the paint is on the walls,
our new stations will be ready too.  Stay tuned!

Thanks for taking a little sneak peak!  More to come in just a few days.  (I can't wait!)

Kids Church Makeover

Our Kid's Church room is beautiful.  Truly amazing.
About 15 years ago a team of talented artists got together and created this:

And this:

And have you seen the rest of the room?

We have loved this room and its beautifully cheerful design.

And yet here we are, wiping the slate clean...

Making room.  Creating space.

It feels CRAZY to me, to be whitewashing the beauty that was created here.

And yet I am convinced of what we are doing.

The conviction comes from a vision for Kids Church to be more experiential.

Starting fresh for us began when we discovered Worship Response Stations.

About two years ago we began carving out space and time for the kids
to personally respond to God after each lesson.
And what we found is that kids truly want to know God's Spirit
for themselves and it is natural for them to learn to hear His voice.
...And so here we are, literally rearranging everything for more of that to happen.

Because at the end of the day, our number 1 goal isn't that our kids would just
know ABOUT God, but that they would KNOW Him for themselves.

Each Sunday we spend time responding to God about the message we've just heard.
You can learn more about this Large Group Response time here and here.

Then we pray a prayer of blessing over them and invite them to
continue their worship by independently visiting a Worship Response Station
of their choice.  The lights are low, worshipful music is playing.
And they come up with notes to God like this:

So these beautiful walls are becoming blank slates to post permanent,
artistic and meaningful Worship Stations.

The new decor will be functional, filled with alters of remembrance
of what God is doing in our kids.

So I guess you could say we are putting our "money" where our mouth is to do what it takes to make room for the Holy Spirit to interact with our kids ...so that they can experience God for themselves.  Regularly.  Repeatedly.

Today we wrote scriptures over all the newly-primed walls.

To declare who God is in our lives.

...To proclaim what we believe...

...and to claim His promises over this new season.

And so it has begun!  Our Kids Church Makeover.

Check back often for updates over the next 30 days to watch the progress.
We will be posting about each of the new Worship Response Stations as we create them.

September: The Environment of Serving

We love our Home Group!  There is something about hanging with the same people over time, carrying each other's burdens, praying, listening, laughing and chasing your kids together that makes you feel a little bit like family.

Twice a month we get together with our small group.  (officially called CARE Groups at our church.)  Our group of 6 young families gathers around a potluck dinner for conversation, worship, a reading from the Word, and often a craft or activity.  Each month there is a different principle, or "environment" that we are trying to foster in the lives of our busy families.
We use the HomeFront Magazine as our curriculum.  Have you ever checked it out?
It's free and full of ideas on how to create positive and life-giving environments
in your home through quality family time.

This month we are focusing on the Environment of Serving.
Serving asks the question, "What needs to be done?"
Isn't that a great atmosphere to create in your family's life?

Here are some of the girls in our CARE Group thinking up "Acts of Service" to write on fall leaves...

And of course one of my boys had to include something about poop
(...at least it was about picking up the DOG's poop).

We got to create a fall decoration that had meaning.
Each leaf had one Act of Service written on it.
How many Acts of Service could we do this month?

And, later at home, we hung our "fall service garland" in the dining room.

And the conversation about why we serve somehow seemed to bring up that Jesus came to serve, not to be served, and HE was the Son of God!
So actually asking the question, "What needs to be done?"
puts us in excellent company.

A Wild Ride ...in the Dark

Isn’t it funny how most of us really love a wild ride?  From movies to rollercoasters, all over the world people pay big money for wild ride experiences.

My favorite wild ride is Space Mountain at Disneyland.  I love that it’s so dark you can’t even see your own hand in front of your face. As you strap in, sit back and begin rolling up the steep climb into “space unknown” you realize that you’ll be flying blind.  You won’t even know if the next second will leave you plunging toward the bottomless black depths, or darting sideways in a tummy-tossing corkscrew.  You are never sure how high is high or how low is low.  It’s pitch black and you are on the ride of your life.

Why is it though that when real life resembles my favorite roller coaster I never EVER think “This is AWESOME”?  When your world seems to plunge you into a blind free-fall, totally out of your control, have you ever once thought to raise your hands in the air and holler “Whoo Hoo!” like a crazy person having the time of your life?

It’s in times like these that we find comfort in the idea that our lives are a story and, as we know, every good story has it’s share of nail biting twists and turns to make it a hair-raising adventure before arriving safely home at the happy ending.   But at the same time when life feels utterly sideways we can become so tempted to look at God and say, “Where ARE you?  This can’t be right!”  and then we dive in and try to "fix" and redirect onto a safer, more controllable course.  But we must be very watchful for this danger in ourselves: of seeing "me" or "you" as the main character of a story that needs to be rearranged, reworked, rewritten, ...around us.

CS Lewis, one of the greatest storywriters of all time, warns:

“Above all beware of excessive day dreaming, of seeing yourself in the center of a drama, of self pity, and as far as possible, of fears.”

Aha!  And here we must face the truth about the stories of our lives with eyes wide opened.  The cold hard truth is that:

Life. Does Not. Revolve. Around. Me.

Uh Hum.  That’s never easy to say.

But like a band-aid, let’s rip it off all at once and find relief.  Because…
There’s more.

WE are not the main character of our own lives.

And our life stories are not the BIG story.

The greatest storywriter of all time is not CS Lewis, and the greatest story of all time does not star the Sons of Adam or the Daughters of Eve.

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

Once upon a time in a land dark and void HE was there; …hovering over the deep.  And in a monumental moment His voice shook the emptiness, resounding forth with power, as it reverberated through an empty expanse.  And when He spoke, LIFE sprung from nothing; creation arose, and The Story began to unfold.  A story of a love so deep it had no end.  A story of betrayal and perfect friendship broken.  A story of a world groaning with the weight of loss; and a God reaching His heart to save it.  And so The Big God Story has rumbled through time with white-knuckle twists and turns until that dark day when the bottom completely dropped out… at the cross.  Death!  The END?  Silence.
But with an impossible twist the story wasn’t over!  The crescendo was building!  ALIVE!  The resurrection of our Hero thundered and shook the expanse, and the rumblings gained strength and power and momentum as the impartation of the rushing Breath and Consuming Fire of God’s Spirit invaded the narrative, multiplying into a million sparks, each one on it’s own divine course, igniting a wildfire to the ends of the earth.

And, of course you see, GOD is the main character of this epic tale.

Not me.  Not you.

CS Lewis wanted to warn us about the danger of falling into the clever trap that WE are the main character of our own lives; that WE are the center of our own dramas.
The sun doesn’t revolve around us; but rather we revolve around HIM.

And maybe the most important part of being in those dark places of life, is that HE is there.  Because maybe we might realize He is all we need.  Not what He can give us, do for us or create for us.  But Him.  Just Him.  "Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters"  Gen 1:2

It is our destiny to be the sparks, not the Fire.  Our stories are the little stories within the larger narrative; the rays of light that burst forward on a million different courses, carrying the Holy Flame to ignite Faith in a darkened world.  He is doing something bigger than me… bigger than you.  He is rescuing His beloved from getting lost in the dark.

We may have times that shake us to our inner core; when the bottom drops out of our life track and we feel we are in an unsettling free fall.  These can be heart breaking moments.  Sometimes they can lead us to be overwhelmingly tempted to do whatever we can to regain control.   We might even want to re-imagine ourselves bigger than we should, which has the unintentional side-effect of shrinking our God down to size, waiting on a chain to attack on our behalf, at a simple word from us.

But our God is not in a tame lion.  He is the One True Living God, the Roaring Lion of Judah, the One who is writing His Story deep inside the hearts of this world. -HIS story.  Not ours.  He is in charge.  Not me.  There is always a larger story, much bigger than we can see, much bigger than we can fully understand, unfolding.   And in those murky moments, our primary part of that story is to trust in the One who is bigger than us.  It is much easier to trust our God to be bigger than our troubles, than to trust our God to be bigger than ourselves.

God is doing something bigger than we can understand during those difficult twists in the dark.   And so we remember, we are not alone.  In the darkness His hand reaches out, so that we can grasp it and tightly hold on for dear life.  He is there.  He is enough.  He never leaves nor forsakes us.  And in thanksgiving and desperation we hold, squeezing so hard we leave nail marks.  Remember those nail marks?  They are in His hands still.

When we surrender to God, we let go of our own course.  We don’t roll along the track of our own pursuits anymore. (That track always derails in the end anyway).  We understand that we don't actually know best.  But God does.  We step onto a wild ride that will often not feel safe, or predictable.  Like most wild rides it doesn’t avoid danger, but sometimes travels right through the middle of it.  This track we roll on is the scarlet ribbon of God’s mercy, grace and redemption.  It is His plan to redeem mankind and the track that will one day bring us Home.  It is the only way to navigate through this dark world and not crash blindly.  Because: we can’t see in the dark.  But our Big God can.

So when the view ahead is pitch black and we can’t even see our own hands waving in front of our faces, let alone the path before us, we must remember that the darkness is as light to Him.  We can't always know the road ahead, but He does.    When we try to plan everything; see everything; know everything -to reach too far into the dark and invisible places, we will probably find ourselves getting off-track.   He is in control.  We were not created to be in control; to run the show.  We were created to trust, follow, and believe.  That is how we roll.

We Believe.   That our lives are part of an epic story of redemption.   Because our hearts can too easily be crushed, bruised, broken.   Bad things afflict.  Life can be mixed up and confusing.  But God REDEEMS.  Believe it.  He leaves nothing lost in the darkness that cries out for the light.  He will buy back all confusing, dark, painful, crushing free-falls.  Stay on track.  He is taking you somewhere.  Somewhere full of redemption.  And light.

Our Redeemer is working out a plan to rescue those who still haven't seen the light.   This rescue plan is much bigger than you or I.  Will you trust Him in the uncertainty and discomfort of living by faith rather than by sight?  Will you carry the spark of His fiery love to the darkest corners of your reach... and yet reach no further?  Will you trust HIm to be in charge?  Will you release your story to be about His Story?  Before the foundations of the earth, He laid a track to redeem our life stories and bring us safely home.

And so, we hang on tightly to Him: we BELIEVE.   Because, as we all know, it’s the ride of our lives, and that's just how we roll.
